About this app
ZeroTier One lets an Android phone or tablet join a private virtual network to reach devices and services across different locations. It uses peer-to-peer virtual Ethernet connections, making it useful for remote access, distributed teams, and home labs that need mobile access to their network resources.
Joining a network from Android
To connect, you enter a Network ID in the app and request access. The device is then authorized through ZeroTier Central before becoming part of the private network. On Android, the virtual network is presented as a VPN connection, while the underlying network links participating devices through ZeroTier.
This setup brings a mobile device into the same virtual network as resources at home, at work, or in the cloud. Network membership is governed by the Network ID and device authorization, rather than simply making a service publicly accessible.
Encrypted links between devices
ZeroTier builds peer-to-peer virtual Ethernet links between enrolled devices, with end-to-end encryption protecting traffic between them. Participating devices can include phones, laptops, servers, and embedded hardware. Unlike a model that routes all communication through one central VPN server, ZeroTier supports direct connections between network members.
The networking system discovers usable paths across NAT and different network conditions, allowing devices to connect without manual port forwarding. It also supports connectivity as a mobile device moves between cellular and Wi-Fi networks. These functions support tasks such as remote administration, file transfers, and access to shared services.
Connecting sites, cloud services, and IoT hardware
A virtual network can bring together PCs, phones, servers, routers, and IoT devices across multiple sites and cloud providers. For a distributed team, this provides a shared network for tools and data hosted in different places. In a home lab, the same approach can connect a phone with services running on local or remote systems.
IoT use is also supported through end-to-end connectivity to specialized devices. The common purpose across these scenarios is private networking between participating systems, whether those systems are in one building or spread across separate environments.
An open-source engine in a mixed-device ecosystem
ZeroTier One uses an open-source networking engine. The wider ecosystem includes clients for Android, iOS, Windows, macOS, Linux, Docker, NAS, and OpenWRT environments, allowing different kinds of systems to participate in the same virtual network. The Android app provides the mobile connection within that broader setup.
